  Brian,

 Only some quick answers here:

1)a) Problably 'cause the pump housing/cast part is from another application,
     and Standard/Triumph/British Leyland wanted to make it fit, or:
    b) Maybe because that's the only way to get a pipe to fit to the haousing
2) Will the length be too short if you remove the1-1/2 inch adapter?

And a quick suggestion:

 Get a hacksaw, cut the tube, remove the nut/fitting thing, measure the O.D.
of the pipe, go to a knowledgeable automotive store, and get the compression
collar.  Do it the right way, if not for your restoration plans, then for the 
next
guy to own it.  Don't be a DPO ;)
