    Sometimes, when a fuel tank has poor ventilation pro-
blems, a car will behave exactly as you state yours did.  The
reason is that as fuel gets sucked out of the tank, an insufficient
amout of air is let in to replace the volume.  If it is a vent restriction
problem instead of a complete vent blockage, then the problem on-
ly occurs at sustained high RPM running.  The diagnosis in this case
can be maddening.
  The simple way to check for this is to drive on the highway with your
fuel cap open (just be sure it's not raining, or you'll start a whole slew of
other problems ;)... ). If the car runs fine this way, you've found the problem.
