You are not alone. After buying a healthy looking (paint 1 year old,
I should have been warned!) Spitfire Mk3 1970, I have changed the engine
(the old one blew), the rear spring (twice), both rear U-joints, the
carbs and a lot of other things have taken a lot time to get to work right.
It has been fairly stable now for about a year (daily driver ~ 10.000 km/year)
although it has suddenly decided to overheat (though it's about 60 deg F
during the day and the thermostat is removed)
I would not be surprised if there is a cycle where each new owner buys a car
only to find out it needs a thorough overhaul, spends the time and money,
drives it
for a few years until it starts falling apart again, when he finds a new victim.
It's not insanity - it is just appreciation that everything does not necessarily
have to be sensible.
