Wally,
Since I got deep into this when installing a Mk II "wide" (not!) ratio
to replace my Mk I "ridiculous 1st gear", I found out the hard way.
The MAJOR problem between a Mk I and Mk II tranny inter changeability is
the speedometer cable drive ratio. At the bottom of the speedo, the Mk
I's (and "A's") have a number "980". This means the speedo distance
gearing is set to 980 wheel turns per mile. The Mk II is much higher,
about 1020, I think. The reason is the helical internal transmission
gear has different tooth count, not just the speedo cable end (perhaps).
Although the speedo can be "recalibrated", the odometer requires an
internal gear change, if they are available.
THAT is the difference. If you are using a Mk II tranny (good choice),
remember to have the helical gear tooth count from the Mk I installed
inside the tranny, or you will have a MAJOR speedo issue.
