Hi Wally, 
No idea if this is the problem... But you should check to see if the driven
gear moves in and out of its bushing when you turn the transmission
tailshaft one way or the other. It could be that the gear is worn or else
the speedo gear's output shaft is free to move in and out of engagement due
to the rotation of the tailshaft because of some other problem.
