Listers,
I am on my second fuel pump and last night it quit about 60 miles from
home. The culprit event was sitting in a traffic jam from an accident in
riverside for 40 minutes inching along and having the fuel pump heat
soaked by the muffler 3 inches away. I was running an Aero Motive pump
in the past but it was too loud, Then I ran a New Holley HP 150 series
Pump but it died and I assumed it was because the filter was full of
paint crap from inside the tank but apparently it was killed by the
heat. Now I am running the self regulated Holley HP 125 and it quit but
after the car cooled down (thankfully it was a brisk 68 degrees here) it
fired back up and I was off. The real problem is the location of the
muffler under the Pump.
After some extensive research I have found the solution I believe ... at
least I have ordered the bits and will see them soon. I am running Dyno
Max Mufflers (14 inches X 10 Inches) but Flow master makes a Heat shield
for their SUV 50 series mufflers (10 inches X 17 inches). The part
number is 51017 and they are about $27 each from Summit. I have also
ordered some Reflecta Shield heat barrier $41 for a 14 x 20 inch chunk
and my plan is to mount the heat barrier to the heat shield and then
strap the heat shield assemblies to the mufflers with the provided
straps.
If someone else has nicely solved this performance fuel pump roasting
problem please let me know as I am a little frustrated. I do not want to
relocate the pump or mount the pump horizontally.
