Speedo cable/drive

Have an interesting issue with my car just finishing extensive 
restoration/rebuild.

The speed doesn't work. Disconnecting the speedo cable from the back of the 
speedo and driving forward it doesn't roatate, when reversing it rotates 
perfectly?

Anyone else had this before and found the problem?
