There have been lots of stuff on the net about the lack of speedo.
Odds are that the plastic gear at the end of the cable and which
sticks into the trans has been stripped or rounded in the forward
direction. There are still enough of teeth to work it in reverse.

Get another gear from your Ford dealer. OEM was 15 teeth but
they have been unavailable for years. Next up is 16 teeth. Each
step up reduces the speed reading about 3 mph.

Don't just replace the gear. If so buy two as you'll strip the new
gear in about 100 yds. The gear was stripped because the
cable seized when it couldn't turn the speed head gear. Remove
the speedo and using a suitable device, see if the gear turns
freely. If not try a small amount of good oil and work it until
the gears turns easily. That'll make it work for who know how
long. Don't use an old cable and drill to test the speed. The
head gear is fragile.

If the head is still frozen, time to get it rebuilt. I believe the
net users have been using MOMO.

Buy a new cable with housing from SS.
