Many thanks to those that replied.

FYI. The seat foams were replaced a month or two back before my vacation trip 
and all was fine and clean at that point. Never actually inspected the teeth 
that closely at the time. But I don't recall anything untoward looking.
I suspect the mechanism due to the symptoms - I can release the lever and it 
allows movement and sort of locks but then, with that force exerted upon 
acceleration, it slips.

On Saturday my drivers seat suddenly stopped working properly. Not fun when you 
accelerate off at the lights and the seat back reclines on you.
I assume that the teeth on the mechanism or the bit that engages in the teeth 
has worn out. I still have to pull the seat and see exactly, but does anybody 
know if these are replaceable parts or is there a solution (apart from having 
it welded or bolted in a fixed position)?
