The accepted practice is to add or remove shims until the nut just nips
up without excessive looseness or tightness at the hub.
An alternative, less used on axle nuts than on other slotted nuts is to
dress a small amount off the base of the slotted nut with a file. Just a
bit at a time until the slots line up and the torque setting is ideal.
