Larry,
I'm pretty sure tha "spacer" you refer to was intended to cut down on
heat transfer from manifold to carbs. I've been running 1 1/2 carbs for
years with just thin (about 1/32in. thick ) gaskets with no problems. I did,
however make up a heat shield out of aluminum sheet metal to help avoid
radiant heat from the exhaust manifold reaching the carbs. It fits between
the intake manifold and the carbs, with a gasket (as above) on each side.
I've never been aware of any problems I could trace to hot carbs with this
setup.
