Hi Folks,
some information to the FIA and there earlier organization who took care for
the "official" World Land Speed Record.
In the beginning, means 1898, there was no international organization who
tooks care, but due to this that the first records (and records attempts) was
set in France - the A.C.F.
took care - the was the automobil club of France - all records to 1902 was set
under there rules.
In 1903, the first time, (this was speed set by C. Rolls from Rolls & Roce
fame) a other organzation accept a record, as the A.C.F. - this was a British
organization - A.C.G.B.I. - and from there on the sh.. began.
The A.C.F. said, that they are the only organization in the world who got the
rights to certified a record and to say that the equipment was correct
installed and used.
Also two other records in the same year recognized by the British and one by
the Belgian R.A.C.B. was ignored by A.C.F.
>From 1904 on, the American origanization A.A.A. went into the same trouble
with the A.C.F.
All records set in the states was ignored by the A.C.F.
The first record - set in the USA - which was recognized and certified by the
A.C.F. was
Fred Marriott's record in 1906 at Daytona Beach - very interested was, that
the A.A.A. also certified the record - but they accept the higher speed over
the flying mile - the A.C.F. accept only the lower kilo speed.
To 1909 the A.C.F. was changed to A.I.A.C.R. - same place, same country, same
arrogance.
>From 1911 the rules changed to the two way average record - the first was set
in 1914 by Hornsted - this record was slower than the current one way record
from 1909 (???).
To 1927 all records from A.A.A. (USA) - K.D.A.K (Danmark) - R.A.C. (Britain)
was ignored from the A.I.A.C.R.
When De Hane Seagrave set the first 200 + mph record in Daytona it was the
first time for a long time that the A.I.A.C.R. certified a record which was
set under A.A.A. equipments.
>From there on all records (to the beginning of WW II) set in the USA was set
under A.I.A.C.R.
After WW II the F.I.A. was found - same place, same country, same arrogance.
The first record under F.I.A. was John Cobb's run in 1947.
The one way speed from Mickey Thompson in 1960 was only recognized by the
U.S.A.C.
But Mickey set in 1959 some F.I.A. records with the Challenger - but with a
lower speed than Cobb and only "International" records.
In the sixties was than the great confusion - Donald Campbell and Bob Summers
got there record certified by the F.I.A.
The first thrust powered record which was certified from the F.I.A. was Art
Arfons record in October 1964.
The 1963 and 64 records from Craig Breedlove with the Three Wheeler was
certified by the F.I.M. the motorcycle organization and U.S.A.C.
Tom Green's and Art Arfons earlier record in 1964 was at first only certified
by the U.S.A.C.
Some more information to Malcolm's note about supercharged or not supercharged
-
correct is that Bob & Bill Summers record can be only in Group II, due to this
that the Group I is only for supercharged engine - Bob & Bill can't be in both
classes.
I copied here the original rule from the F.I.A. into the mail. So everybody
can read or can find out which class he can run..........
