Dan / List
Your spot-on comments reveal the next stage of concern over the FIA once
Appendix A/ World Record Listing is cleaned up. Dan, along with Glenn
Barrett, Bill Taylor and Jim Jensen are the ones who work closely with the
FIA reps and absorb the vast majority of frustration on behalf LSR. They are
due a depth of gratitude for their devotion.
I was dumbstruck in 2001 when the SCCA fellows tried to be FIA reps. Up
until then, I had thought that a great deal "fox and grapes" whining was the
blame, but I understood first-hand, with immeasurable clarity just how
uninformed and unprepared the reps really were when it came to LSR. However,
in quizzing them about their own discipline of road racing, I found them to
be quite competent and believe the problem is lack of "tribal knowledge"
Does an FIA observer really need to bring clocks, or tools? Rather, it is
essential to have a thorough working knowledge basis in order to bear fair
witness to the proceedings and results. To that end the SCTA/BNI and USFRA
do an outstanding job of event management and their work need only be
observed and certified, not duplicated.
It is imperative to have an independent observer to maintain the dignity and
veracity of speed record achievement. That your friends, or admirers saw you
do it is not enough. Any "record" needs to be contested in a irrefutable
environment of wholesale fairness. The "umpires" can't work for the team. I
am not ready to dismiss FIA completely, too many that came before today's
discussion have subscribed to and triumphed, there is deep tradition at
stake that commands respect. More importantly, do we not owe it to those who
died trying for an FIA record to correct the problems so that their lives
were not extinguished in vain? I believe that we do.
