Hi all again.....spoke to a mechanic that knows these engines pretty well.
He said to check oil pressure and make sure that it reads 6 - 8 psi at idle
(approx 750rpm) If I dont get this it is time for a new oil pump. This is no
problem as I already have a new pump still in the Nissan box.
There is a question that is on my mind....given that I have just
installed a new cam chain that still touches the evil L bracket when the
slack is on the "down side" of the chain circuit, doesnt that say that the
cam sprocket is simply too close to the jack shaft sprocket? Maybe this is a
little simplistic, but it really shouldnt be this hard!! , should it?? Gota
admit, this starting to get me down a little....
Cheers, Brian
Head thickness is 4.528-4.530" as measured at the 1st cam tower.
Sounds like your oil pressure is dropping off as it warms up. What is it
showing
on the gauge? It still souldn't touch under any circumstances if (a) the cam
towers are shimmed enough or (b) the tensioner is shimmed enough.

Subject: Cam chain noise...again
Hi all,
my cam chains and gaskets etc arrived yesterday. Spent most of today
installing them. Late in the afternoon I took a deep breath and hit the
starter. Engine started real easy. BUT......no noise at start up (even
though the car has been sitting for two weeks) but after running for about 5
minutes or so....cam chain rattle. Not as bad as before I started, but
definatly still there. It is only there at idle and goes away at about
1100RPM. I am of a mind to cut that bracket on the top chain guide off.
I measured the new chain before I installed it and also the old one. Only
3mm difference. I am really starting to wonder what to do next. Can any one
throw any ideas at me.
I can remember a thread on the list a while ago that spoke of measuring
somewhere on the 2000 head to see how much has been shaved off. Can anyone
remember the location and dimensions?? May be the cam needs thicker
shimms???
Things so far that have been done....
Cam towers have been shimmed, I have had shimms made up for the tensioner
and installed them, new chains, new sprockets.
If this keeps up I might have to look at an alternative power plant.......
See ya, Brian.
