If the sprocket was too large, the cam timing wouldn't stay the same and the
engine wouldn't run.

What you describe is saying the Chain touches the Evil-L no matter where the
tensioner is at.
This tells me:
1: Wrong size sprocket on cam; too large.
2: Wrong Chain; links too big.
