Actually, you're mistaken, the sparkplug fires every 1/3 rotation of the
rotor, but that's not the measure of rpm for a rotary engine. You count each
rotation of the eccentric shaft, the rotary equivalent of a crankshaft. So
you actually only get as many firing pulses out of a rotary as a 4 stroke 6
cylinder engine.
There's a site on the web that has animation of it (anyone have a pointer, I
can't find it right now)
