Hi Joe
I have 6 inch rims and 185/60 rubber on my similar bodied hillman superminx
racecar. In order to stop the wheels rubbing, I hammered back the lip inside
the guard, which gave about another 1/2 inch clearance. I also used a
scissor jack with some blocks of wood to further force the guard out almost
another 1/2 inch. I recommend that this is done by someone experienced,
otherwise the panels may crease and/or paint crack, as the double skin does
make it quite strong.
Another option is to fit a panhard rod to locate the axle better, which will
also improve handling. Using this I have fitted 7 inch rims and 205/60
rubber on a Humber sceptre.
Interesting to hear of someone fitting a ford cortina diff to their rootes
car. I have considered the same, cause the drum brake setup is better, and
the diffs i expect are stronger, and the whole setup may even be lighter.
You can also fit LSDs much easier. How did the installation go for you?
Greg
