The ford cortina axle does have a wide variety of LSD options,
but...
1) It is not beefier (same ring and pinion size more or less)
2) The axle design suffer a serious design flaw, where stress is machined
into the axles near the outside bearing interface.
On race cortinas, pintos and other Ford products that use this axle
design, there is typically a mandated inspection period for ANY
race vehicle, which includes magnefluxing the axle in the point of question.
It has not been uncommon for lotus cortinas (common ford race car) to
loose a rear wheel during competition.
I suspect there are superior axle options available.
