A roll pin is similar to a shear pin. I think the biggest difference is
that a shear pin is designed to be a sacrificial component, whereas a roll pin
is not. Some shear pins are solid, and roll pins are typically hollow,
usually a piece of flat rolled width-wise to create a long, cylindrical shape.
Shear pins are quite common on ag and industrial equipment, typically used in
drive mechanisms whereby the pin shears when excessive torque is applied or a
mass is decelerated too quickly. The pin cost 29 cents, the damage caused by
one
of the above (2) scenarios could be astronomical.
