Brian---The story about Triumph putting the ring gear on backwards is
true. I haven't heard of any other owners who have had their ring gear
knocked rearward tho. The one you have from the '76 should be the same.

I can't say for certain about TR-6 in the very early years, but my 250's
starter pinion is pulled forward into the ring gear when engaging

the bevel needs to be facing away from the engine to the rear. Of
course
the opposite is true with the later starters where the pinion is pushed
rearward into the ring gear.
This "pulled pinion" starter configuration was pretty common up to 1968
or
so for most LBCs. For a decent picture see this Moss link:

Dick my ring gear was knocked back on my car and was the reason that I
pulled my transmission for the 1st time. It is possible that many cars
never experienced this because at the time of their first engine rebuild
the issue was corrected.

Greg, the TR250 used the same starter arrangement as the TR4, but the
TR6 switched over to the starter that engages the ring gear front to
rear.
