<I've had a chronic problem with the starter on my '74 not engaging the ring
gear consistently. I was stumped because I could not see any evidence of
wear
on the ring gear. >

This previous fall I began to have difficulties with starting my '76. I had
a local starter place rebuild the starter, brought it back twice, (and they
went out of their way to find the problem) because it still wouldn't start.
I spoke with TRF's tech line and they said that Triumph (you'll love this
one) put the entire run of TR-6 ring gears on with the bevel that helps the
starter gear engage with the ring gear facing the rear of the car. I removed
the trans cover, tranny, clutch and flywheel, and, lo & behold, the bevel
was on backwards. I guess that every so often the drirve gear would hit the
straight part of the ring gear, and the force of the solenoid would bang the
gear towards the rear of the flywheel a little, until finally it was
eccentric enough to no longer be engaged by the drive gear.

On my flywheel the gear was definitly moved backwards. With the help of a
friend, we removed the gear, replaced it with the bevel facing the motor.
Then we heated it with a torch and tapped it into place, while leaving
aproximately a 1/6" in. gap with the flange on the front of the flywheel.

The car has started perfectly since then. (Well, the starter engages
perfectly, but the car is not starting at present, but that's a story for
another post.)
