I can't say for certain about TR-6 in the very early years, but my 250's
starter pinion is pulled forward into the ring gear when engaging meaning
the bevel needs to be facing away from the engine to the rear. Of course
the opposite is true with the later starters where the pinion is pushed
rearward into the ring gear.
This "pulled pinion" starter configuration was pretty common up to 1968 or
so for most LBCs. For a decent picture see this Moss link:
