Doug,
I would like to add a bit by answering your other question.
Hugh did an excellent job on the compression topic...as a matter of fact
there are so few people that really understand the relationship between
compression ratio, static compression, and how the camshaft comes into
play.
I would not tighten-up the crank end play. Others may jump on this
thought enthusiastically, but I can almost certainly guarantee you that
this would be a bad idea!
An overly tight engine is not a "good thing".
.007" cold will become less when the engine is hot. I don't how much
less, but I'd have to say .003" cold would not make me the least bit
comfortable if I really wanted to turn the engine up!
Best regards,
Jim Swarthout
I also plan to attempt a crank end float of about
.003" instead of the recommended .007". Any
opinions/experiences with reducing the end float
would be greatly appreciated (.007" seems very
loose to me and since these engines tend to hammer
the thrust washers anyway, I think I would like to
tighten up this clearance).
I'll call around tomorrow, but it if my arithmetic
is correct, looks like I'll need one standard and
one .015" thrust washer to get there (I only have
.005" thrust washers in my garage, and I am
setting at .0075" end float right now).
