Hi List,
When I rebuilt my cylinder head for my '74 TR6
last summer, I was uncertain regarding the pending
California changes exempting 20 year-old cars from
smog check, so I did not mill the head.
Now it appears that the 20 year exemption is in
place, and it should be safe to up the compression
a bit.
I would appreciate very much hearing your
experiences with milling the head and octane
requirements, ping, detonation, etc. I am not
racing the car, but would like to make it more
efficient. It would be fine if it would need
premium gas, but I do not want to get exotic here.
I know I will need to get shorter push rods, but
before I do something I will regret, I would like
to hear your personal experiences before "making
the cut."
I also plan to attempt a crank end float of about
.003" instead of the recommended .007". Any
opinions/experiences with reducing the end float
would be greatly appreciated (.007" seems very
loose to me and since these engines tend to hammer
the thrust washers anyway, I think I would like to
tighten up this clearance).
I'll call around tomorrow, but it if my arithmetic
is correct, looks like I'll need one standard and
one .015" thrust washer to get there (I only have
.005" thrust washers in my garage, and I am
setting at .0075" end float right now).
thanks in advance,
doug shook
