As described below, exactly the same thing has happened to me several times; 
the cable is NOT broken, the latch mechanism WORKS and yet the hood wouldn't 
pop open.  When it happens I get it to open the way that David describes.  The 
question is why and most importantly what is the fix.  If anyone knows please 
respone on list, we can't be the only three that this has happened to!

Steve,
I had this happen before and what worked for me was to have someone pull on
the release cable while I applied palm pressure, in a pulsing action like
your trying to start somebody's heart, to the area of the hood just above
the latch. Press as hard as you can without deflecting the hood.  You don't
want press so hard that you damage the sheet metal.
