Hi Dick:

I replaced the original transmission with an O/D unit, so the punches don't
mean a whole lot for me either. What I cannot remember is if I stupidly
assembled the propshaft correctly, or if it is even possible to assemble it
incorrectly. I do have a harsh vibration that gets worse with speed, felt
right through the gear shift handle.

Hi, Mark---The Bentley manual makes reference to "marking" the prop
shaft flanges to their counterparts at the transmission tail flange, and
the differential drive flange. I found center punch marks on my car on
these flanges and assumed this is what Bentley was referring to. (I have
always used these) However, I have not seen these on other TR's that
have come my way for repair. I would think the prop shaft could be
balanced as a unit, given that it has a weight tacked on. Again, I
assume this was to balance it.

I have recently installed another diff, and of course it had its own
drive flange. If it would have had a "mark" on it, it would be
meaningless. I haven't had it up to any significant road speed yet, to
see if there's any vibration. (I really don't expect any)

I don't know what changing the prop shaft U-joints might do to upset
this shaft balance, or if the factory includes these in their initial
balancing. Nor could I explain why moving the diff tail flange 180 deg.
helped one owner cure his vibration problem.
