Hi Walter-I did this about two years ago with excellent results. I
sanded everything down to bare metal using sandpaper, wire brushes,
dremel tool & lots of dust masks and elbow grease. An aerosol etching
primer, good quality sandable primer and finally an after market ( I
used Plastikote ) prepared spray can that most closely matched my paint.
I can tell you know it's all in the preparation and sanding. Every short
cut you take will come back to haunt you when the paint is applied.
I pulled the wiring harness back in to the drivers foot well. This is a
good time to order all the engine compartment harness grommets. You can
use tin foil to mold and cover things you don't want painted, it works
great and stays put.
While the engine is out check the rack boots.

Good luck
