Paul had it right on the money. They had used a 948 throwout bearing and 
the thick 1275 plate. I used Randy's suggestion for how to check 
clearances,  pulled the rubber grommet to give me more adjustment room, and 
could see that I could operate the clutch, but had not room for wear. Put 
in a 1275, and it's fine.
