You bought that car in that condition for that price?! If so, all I would
need is a big ribbon and a note on the windscreen saying "Happy Birthday."
How could it be 98-percent complete if the motor/tranny are gone and the
body is shot? Doesn't that leave basically only the frame? I gotta be
misreading something here, correct?
Being a newbie, what's the story on U20 motors and 5-speed trannies?

Last May I bought my '68 1600 converted to 2000 from a doctor in Texas and
drove it home to Minneapolis (about 1300 miles). It needs some minor body
work and a new paint job, but is mechanically sound with a redone interior.
I have receipts for around $8k worth of work done to the car by the 2
previous owners over the last 8 years or so and I only paid $4500. So if
you aren't set on a '67 1/2, you can and will find a pretty nice 2000 for
around your $5k range. Just keep looking and take your time to find the
right car for you.

the year 1968 to see what $4500. can get you.
BTW: I also found a '70 2000 that is 98% complete with motor and tranny
already removed (body is pretty shot due to upper midwest salt) from a guy
in Michigan for $350.
