Quite so.  I have a K&N on my TR8 and it DOES offer some initial 
improvement after the car is first started.  You can really feel it.  
However, Fred is right, as soon as underhood temps grow, the benefits 
diminish drastically.  You can pop off the little corner cover (which 
is where a carb'd car gets some of its air) and get a little extra cool 
air from there but what you REALLY want to do is to replace the whole 
airbox with something that breathes better AND gets cold air too.  It's 
on my list of things-to-do.
