Right, Ron. Note that the Mk.IV and early (1973-74 U.S. version) 1500s use a variant of that three-rail box. It's pretty much the same except for a synchro first gear and a larger output flange. It,

There's definitely no external difference between the two types of three rail gearboxes... I've done the swap myself in my '70 Mk3. They "stole" space for the synch equipment on the first gear from

IMS, that "slightly longer" amounts to around 5/8", not enough to worry about, since the sliding joint prop shaft can easily accommodate that outrageous difference in length! ;-) --Andy * * * * * *

The selector shaft and plungers are the first thing the manuals suggest but I have never actually found this to be the problem. The synchro balls and springs are a good possibility as the springs so
