Glenn, You can indeed replace the gasket with the engine in place. The real trick is having to rotate the crank so the rod journals are all sideways in the block. With piston 1 down, the pan will not

About draining the Diff. When I did it I pulled the diff right out and put it back in. Not the easiest way to do it but I had to remove it for other reasons anyway. Does anyone have a suggestion for

When I last had my Spit in for a major service, the garage (specializing in British), drilled a drail hole in the diff and put in a 1/2" pipe thread drain plug, same as the motor. No more problems.--
