Hi folks, I'm after some clarification and list wisdom again. I've been sent these questions regarding a Spitfire 4 from a new owner and his friend (who also has a MkI so presumably is curious himsel

All I can tell you is that 1500's have electronic tachos, so your guy who saw a 1500 with a cable drive at a scrappy - either it's non-stock, or he was mistaken. Richard -- Important Notice: The inf

Not quite correct. Early 1500s had cable tachs as well. My '73 Federal version has a cable tach. I realize that you are only talking about the home market version, but I thought I would set the recor

Wouldn't a '73 be a MkIV (albeit with 1500 engine for the States), rather than an actual Spitfire 1500? Since the 1500 engine was never fitted to the MkIV in the UK (and I am assuming that Suzie's qu

The '73s and '74s were marketed as Spitfire 1500s in the States, not as Mark IVs. The problem was that they were hybrid cars. (or bas*ards). Essentially, they were Mark IVs with 1500 lumps, but they

Correct. Interestingly enough, a friend on another list found that the 1500cc engine was actually first used by Triumph in 1969 (of all things!), and in South Africa, at that! Gary /// spitfires@auto

One must remember to think globally. At which point, one would ask "How 'bout them 1973 and 1974 US 1500cc's?" Gary /// spitfires@autox.team.net mailing list /// or try http://www.team.net/cgi-bin/m

Actually... No. The '73 and '74 USA 1500's were exactly that, Spitfire 1500's. They were not, and are not, called the Mk.IV 1500's as so many owners wrongfully call them. They were transitional vehi

Let me expand a bit on that. There were a few of the US Spec. early 1500's assembled in Belgium. I don't know why, but suspect it was to take advantage of excess capacity in that facility. At any rat

But Wait!... There's More! Gary, There were in fact several very early US 1500's that were badged with a MkIV/1500 metal plate on them. I don't think that remained in place very long before Triumph r

This wouldn't suprise me in the least. In fact, I'm sure that with any new model, there's that brief interlude of confusion. I've never personally seen a badge which showed both Mk.IV and also 1500
