Happens to mine, and I think all manual trannies with a bit of wear. It helps if you just pull the shifter into second or whatever, part way, to stop the idler gears, I think.

Sounds like one of the many u-joints back there are worn. I've had the same problem caused by the main drive shaft joints being worn, but all of them need to be checked including the axle shaft joint
