cat converters

Hi all!  Has anyone put a cat converter on their spit without it being
connected to an emissions system with success?  I'm running SUs and don't
know if their inconsistency in running would burn a cat out quickly.  Would
there be any benefit in emission reduction with just sticking a cat on?  I
only drive this car a few thousand miles a year, so even if it only lasted a
few years that would fine.
