Well the results of my Right or Left query are in: It seems that starting with the '53 model the spare was definitely on the left with an indented fender except for one report on a Canadian version,

Yes phosphatizing can damage your glossy topcoat finish. It is only recommended when you are going to prime unpainted bare steel. If you are doing some spot repair and you don't have to take it down

I think it might be a Canadian truck thing .... I had one other report like yours from Canada. It might be that it was not a factory side mount too. It seems that all righthand mounts have no fender
