I removed the one side of the shock arm, undid the four bolts holding the shock to the x-member and lowered the shock, kingpin and spring pan all together, you can then pull the shock off the kingpin

not I would tend to agree but that doesn't explain why it usually appears on the drivers door, my RHD roadster also has it on the drivers door. I would guess that closing the door is the cause. Also
