- The first fuel filter should be between the tank and the pump. This keeps crud out of the pump that will kill it. Could be the problem. If the pump is filled with rust and dirt it may not be working

- Should need nothing except the gasket. If you just must put something on them use the thinnest layer you can of Permatex Ultra Blue. I use latex gloves and smear it on so thin you can see through it.

- Since you talked about needles I assume you have the SU carbs. Check your dash pot oil. If they have none or it is too thin the acceleration will suffer. The oil slows the piston rise making the mix

- Black is caused by running too rich. Roadsters positively slobber fuel out the exhaust when cold with the choke on. Since it clears up when it warms up it should not be a problem. You might double ch
