I ran across this problem several times driving the Land Rover on wash
board dirt roads.  The tubing vibrates and fatigues at the attachment
point.  I used your proposed solution and it worked fine.  An
alternative is to shorten the unattached tubing length by clamping it
one or more places along the length. The shorter the length of metal
tubing free to vibrate the less it apt to break from fatigue.
