IMO it's very unlikely you've applied enough force with sockets & washers to
compress the Fig 8 gaskets enough to measure.  If the liners aren't sufficiently
proud of the block now, they won't rise after releasing the clamps.

Even with all the clamping force applied by the head, the liners still remain
somewhat proud of the block ... the stock composite head gasket compresses more
over the liners than it does over the block.

I believe the original Fig 8 gaskets were copper ... the plastic coated steel
ones were an aftermarket product.  I suspect they were only cheaper, not better.
