Ike-
    In addition to Dave Massey's post,  be sure to torque the intake (and
exhaust) manifolds. They are notorious for loosening up and causing vacuum
leaks. Some of what you are describing may be due to a vacuum leak which
leans the fuel mixture and causes high idle.
