No, the bearing inserts available now are generally considered to be
inferior to the original ones.

Most likely "tri-metal" : steel core, then copper, then a thin surface layer
of soft babbitt.

I honestly don't know.  I suspect this is one of those hideously complex
questions that boils down to "it depends".
