TR3A starter dog extension bolt - removal

Stumped ... How do you lock up the crankshaft to remove the starter dog bolt? 
Is it clockwise or counter clockwise? Seems to be on there good 'n tight, but 
I can't really get any resistance without locking up the crank ... or am I 
missing something. It's not really addressed in any of the manuals.  Just the 
brief reference to " ... undo the starter dog extension bolt ...". I need to 
remove it to get at the timing chain cover.
