The ign light measures for a difference between the main alternator output
and a "reference output" from a separate regulator in the alt. If the
voltages are the same the light does not glow. If there is a difference
then there is voltage to light the light. Last time my ign light came on it
was the reference regulator that had gone bad and the main charging circuit
was fine. (22v out from the reference reg.) I took it to a nearby
alternator rebuild shop and he said he'd make it good as new. I said
NOOOOOO! It's a Lucas, make it BETTER than new. He laughed.

Subject: ignition light glowing
80 tr7, now the ignition light is glowing. what causes it to glow ? it is
not on bright, just glowing and doesn't go off as rpms go up. the voltage
is 13.6 headlights on to 14.3 volts with no accessories on. the engine
running with these measurements. 12.6v with engine off. does that sound
right ? thanks, larry
