Tim:
I would suggest that you get the TR up off the floor for an inspection
of the drive haft and universal joints, from what you describe, your U joints
are real bad and somehow are resisting normal rotation thus putting pressure on
the tranny (hard shift).
Otherwise, the unthinkable, have you change the rear end oil lately?
The TR rear end is a piece of precision work where the ring and pinion are
actually ground together much like seating valves. After finishing they are
numbered in pairs for life. If you fail to use the lubricant specifiedby the
factory, you could come to grief over a period of time.
