Okay, thanks Jerry & George -- I fired up the TR4, let it warm up.  Back out
of the garage in reverse, no problem, no noise.  Go probably twenty feet in
first gear, and that groaning noise occurs, then nearly impossible shift.
Stop. retstart, first gear and move forward.  That noise is not from the
engine.  One reason why I started up the car.  Its coming from 3/4 back,
about where the car seats if pushed all the way back.  Does that help for
more clues?  Is it the u-joint or the rear end.  Starting to think more
along the lines of the u-joint.
    Any suggestions from the gallery appriecated.
