Yeah really! Of course I guess it would be alright just to flush into the
nearest creek, river or bay! Sure would keep folks out of the water. Take a
tour through a modern tertiary wastewater treatment plant and tell me it's
not worth a couple of bucks a day to have all the crap discharged from your
family's bodies, dirty clothes washing, dish washing, and body washing
transported away from your immediate vicinity, treated to near dinking water
standards and used for irrigation or lanscaping with the solids converted to
compost, also for reuse. Think it might get a little rank around the old
homestead without maybe?

Both delivering potable water, and disposing of sewage, cost money.  If you
aren't paying for it directly (I pay a water bill every 2 months, which
includes sewage based on water usage and a separate portion for trash
pickup), you're paying for it indirectly.  To me, this falls under TANSTAAFL
(There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch).
