If memory serves, those packings were a lot thinner than 5/16", more like
1/8". Should be P/N 601994, perhaps you have the wrong ones. I believe the
radiator packings were "As required", meaning don't use them if things line
up better without them. As others have commented, make sure your motor
mounts are up to snuff, and if necessary, add shims (P/N 109582) to the
mounts to get the crank hole lined up.

IMO, fairly little. It makes it harder (though by no means impossible) to
start the engine by yourself without using the starter; but it's usually
easy to find people willing to help push such a cute little car. Some
people like to use the handcrank when setting the valves, but I believe it's
just as easy to put the gearbox in 4th and move the car a little. Of
course, in almost 30 years of TR3A ownership, I've never had a working hand
crank, so perhaps I don't know what I'm missing <g>
