Subject: Whine in gearbox or differential?

I have been given advice that the drivetrain whine I have been hearing in my
TR6 may be the differential. Here is a recap of the symptom:

- Shifts easily in all gears.
- Sounds fine when accelerating or cruising.
- Whines when decelerating while in gear.

The advice was that when you get a noise only while accelerating or
decelerating it is likely the differential.

Does this sound reasonable?

If so, does anybody have a trick for how to verify it is the differential
and not the gearbox?

Thanks,
Hugh Fader
