I can attest to hydrogen embrittlement. I shattered a halfshaft with an
autocross launch in my Lotus. One of the DPOs chrome-plated nearly
everything in sight, including the halfshafts. I replaced both of them with
genuine Lotus parts which are steel covered by boring black paint.
